What is Velvet Antler?

Nearly 40 years ago New Zealand set the standard by which deer are ranch raised and how velvet antler is processed making it much more widely available and affordable. Although it is recently gaining popularity in the USA with the Ray Lewis controversy a couple years ago as a viable supplement with many health benefits, it has been used by American Indians, Europeans, Russians, and Asians thousands of years ago as a folk medicine.  In recorded history, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), gave it top classification 2,000 years ago under the Chinese name Lu Rong for its wide array of benefits.

Red Deer Stag in Velvet Roaming on Open Ranch

Velvet antler is the young precalcified annual growth of antlers found on bucks, stags, and bulls in the spring as their testosterone increases with the season. These antlers are covered with a skin that has the appearance of fine soft hairs giving them a velvety look. After about 55-60 days of growth the velvet antler is removed painlessly in less than 60 seconds so that it may be done as humanely as possible. The antler is then scraped of its velvet and cleaned before it is sold as whole stick antler velvet or segmented into sections and sliced.

Modern understanding has greatly advanced our knowledge of velvet antler and its constituents which can be identified by section with each section having different effects and results. The plentitude of constituents by section work together, like a symphony, to create an efficacious supplement that yields a multitude of benefits.

Deer Antler Velvet Benefits

Deer antler velvet has been studied for quite a while by many countries of the world. Thousands of official peer-reviewed studies have been conducted by New Zealand, Russia, China, Japan, and Korea. Hundreds of papers have been published along with numerous meta-analysis of such gathered scientific information.

Tonic Adaptogen - Although it has been used as a folk medicine for hundreds of years it has commonly been accepted that velvet antler is foremost a tonic adaptogen, allowing us to simply resist fatigue by adapting to stress for greater energy levels and well-being. For many of us, how a tonic adaptogen works will be non-specific, in that, it will assist us in the best way for our own individuality. But nearly always one will experience greater well-being, increased immune function, overall stress resistance, and anti-aging benefits.

Stay on Top of your Job by Physical Adaptation to the Daily Stresses of Work

Mental & Mood Health - As with all tonic adaptogens we will have a feeling of increased well-being and better moods. In other words, they may have anti-depressant effects. This is often attributed to adaptogenic capacities by inhibiting monoamine-oxidase thus preventing the breakdown of specific feel-good neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine. From these effects many report increased motivation throughout the day, including nootropic like effects. As we will see this is coupled by better blood flow and oxygenation.

Injury Healing & Cardic Function - Manufacture of pharmaceuticals from the alcoholic extract of deer velvet, known as Pantocrin, began in the 1930's. Initial studies showed increased wound healing rates and improved strength of cardiac function and rhythm. People prescribed this potent medicine would heal from injuries quicker and more completely and some say Pantocrin may have been on the front lines of World War II in Stalingrad. Among it cardiovascular functions, it was recorded that it normalized blood pressure that was either too low or too high.

Scientifically Studied to Increase Nervous Innervation for Muscular Strength & Endurance

Strength & Muscular Growth - As the world shifted to competitive sports Pantocrin was adopted by the Soviet Olympic Committee during the 1960's, 70's and 80's. If anyone knows their history, the Soviets dominated Olympic weight-lifting during these times. One of their many sought out anabolics was their extensively studied Pantocrin. Specifically they were using it to increase the nerve strength of muscle tissue, thereby increasing innervation of muscular tissue for greater strength and anaerobic endurance. More efficient utilization of muscle fibers during progressive weight training leads directly to muscular growth.

Performance, Recovery, & Regeneration - China took the lead in the 80's Olympic Track & Field with formulations of deer velvet, cordyceps and ginseng. Deer Velvet was used for boosting aerobic capacities via greater red blood cell counts which give increased blood levels of oxygen, profoundly increasing steady state endurance capacities.  Such benefit reduces recovery time between exercises, as well as, preventing fatigue for athletes and laborers. In addition more oxygen and blood to fatigued joints, muscles and organs increases overall regeneration rates.

Deer Antler Velvet is USFDA Approved for Osteoarthritis Pain Relief

Pain Relief & Tissue Repair - In the late '90s the US FDA conducted studies and further recognized the use of deer antler velvet to be in compliance with regulations for treating arthritis, decreasing pain and promoting recovery of joint tissue. Deer velvet is hard tissue that contains many of necessary constituents for growth and repair of our own hard tissues. This translates as reduced inflammation, decreased soreness of joints, and expanded mobility in athletes, laborers, the eldery and suffers of arthritis. It also appear to buffer lactic acid reducing post training soreness as well as DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness).

Hormonal Health, Growth, & Sex - In recent years we have discovered nanogram homeopathic doses of unique peptides known as growth factors such as IGF-1 and their potential for lean mass development and anti-aging capacities. They work by signaling our glands for greater functionality and our cellular structures for nutritional uptake, proliferation, and growth. More active and stimulated glandular function leads to increased hormonal output and some studies suggest increased levels of Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1, Human Growth Hormone, and Testosterone. These effects are recognized in its Traditional Chinese Medicine use of delayed growth in children and improper bone development, as a fertility supplement for men and women due to both its gonadotropic activity and menopause easing attributes.

How to Take a Tonic Tincture

Additional specific information is below concerning how to supplement with deer antler velvet

This tonic is formulated so that it can be taken every day over a course of time. It may take a small period of adjustment to get the full benefits.

Start with a minimum dose of one dropper two to three times a day and increase every three to five days, if necessary, by another dropper. The faster one’s metabolism, the more one can usually handle, but start with small dosages before physical activity and in the morning for desired effects.

Due to the nature of the various growth factors and other natural key constituents moderate and consistent doses (3-6 droppers per day for a 175lb person) over an extended course of time are the best way to derive the most benefit. A maximum dose can range from 3-10 droppers divided into 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 doses a day. It is completely possible to take too much or too little - there is an ideal dosage that will work for you. One is considered to have followed a course of New Zealand Deer Antler Velvet if they have done so for 14-90 days.  The longer you take New Zealand Deer Antler Velvet consistently, the more profound the effects. For more information and explanation please read the following blog post:

Nutritional Considerations

Be aware that nutrition is very important for the activation of the numerous desired effects of New Zealand Deer Antler Velvet. A natural Vitamin C is highly essential, and one may also include a Vitamin A&D/EFA supplement such as Cod Liver Oil to be taken in conjunction with Antler Velvet. Velvet’s potency is also increased when one includes iodine, iron, b12, regular amounts of exercise, and nutritious food in their diet. Be sure to eat enough complete proteins.

NOTE: The restriction of food will nullify many of the desired effects and results of the Deer Antler Velvet.

Expiration Information: Once a bottle is opened, it will expire within 30-45 days; however, an unopened bottle will last two years from its manufacturing date (check your labeling).  This is due to the highly volatile nature of many important key ingredients and their rapid degradation after contact with air. Keep the lid tightly closed and bottle away from light. Refrigeration of unused bottles may maintain potency, but dark cool storage will suffice. If your antler velvet extract solidifies or separates, simply warm the bottle to body heat temp all the way through and shake gently. You may use a pocket or hand or faucet. You may need to repeat this procedure.
