A nerve tonic within herbalism strengthens nerve function in either of two ways: by calming or stimulating nervous system function. A calming nerve tonic is taken to promote better rest and relaxation by reducing excessive response to stress and activity and for minor relief of discomforts. A stimulating nerve tonic is taken to promote increased sensory awareness, cognition, and physical performance.
Calming nerve tonic herbs include:
- Chamomile flowers
- Gotu kola aerials
- Scullcap aerials
- Valerian root
- Ashwagandha root
- Reishi mushroom
- Passionflower leaves
- California poppy aerials
- Lavender flowers
- Rose petals
- Lady's slipper root
Stimulating nerve tonic herbs include:
- Damiana leaf
- Muira puama bark and root
- Catuaba bark
- Green tea leaves
- Yohimbe bark
